Review by William Dart, NZ Herald, 12 June 2010
Three cheers (and more) for Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's new Celebrating the Organ CD, which revisits that magnificent March concert which saw the launching of the newly restored Town Hall instrument.
Itwas a special occasion, with a forceful conductor in Arvo Volmer and Thomas Trotter at the manuals for the Poulenc Concerto and Saint-Saens Organ Symphony.
The Poulenc is a zesty trip, veering between blasts of spooky organ harmonies, sentimental strings and Bachian bustlings. Trotter plays with just the right twinkle in his fingers; Wayne Laird's expert production catches the APO strings at their most expressive.
The Saint-Saens is splendidly laid out in all its sometimes fruity glory, as much appreciated in the lounge as in the concert hall.
Perhaps you will find the final Maestoso even more exciting than it was in the flesh – Laird and his team took advantage of the movement being encored at the second concert, and let this second version take the work to its irresistible conclusion.
Rating:***** Verdict:"Live orchestral recordings let concert hall triumphs have an afterlife"
